World famous as the home of the American automobile
industry, Detroit or the "Motor City", does not
get enough credit for its arts and cultural environment. The
Michigan city is a thriving cosmopolitan
center, and home to a diverse mix of mind-expanding opportunities.
It is home to the recently renovated Max M. Fisher Music Center,
home to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and also fittingly
to The Walter P. Chrysler Museum, which houses more than 65
vehicles showcasing Daimler Chrysler's American heritage. The
city of Cranbrook alone boasts the Institute of Science, home
to a towering T. Rex skeleton, one of Michigan's best planetariums
and other interactive scientific displays for the family,
as well as the Cranbrook Art Museum, which has a fine collection
of contemporary art of 20th century society from Arts and
Crafts to the avant-garde.
Detroit today has also made an indelible mark
in today's pop culture landscape. From 1959 to 1972 an independent
record company located in Detroit, called Motown Records,
began creating and marketing hit records better and in larger
volume than any record company in the world. From Marvin Gaye
to the Jackson 5, Motown represented some of the most popular
and influential musical acts to hit the national scene.
