Burned to the ground three times during the
Civil War, Jackson, the capital city of Mississippi
was, for a time known as "Chimneyville." Nowadays
it is a cultural and political hub, featuring many fine restaurants,
art galleries and museums. Named for Andrew Jackson, the city
is today has plenty of attractions for the budding architecture
and design student. Among the historic buildings in Jackson
are Manship House, an 1857 Gothic Revival home, and the Governor's
Mansion, an 1842 structure that's been home to 35 governors
and also served as the Civil War headquarters for Gen. Ulysses
S. Grant.
Jackson plays host to a number of entertaining
yearly events including the Dixie National Livestock Show
and Rodeo (hosting contestants from all over the U.S.), the
Sky Parade, and the Mississippi State Fair. Every four years,
Jackson hosts the International Ballet Competition, with the
next one scheduled for 2006. Jackson has also staged several
high-profile art exhibitions since the mid 1990s, including
works drawn from famous European museums such as the Prado.
