This city of 700,000 is, by far, Kentucky's
largest and most exciting. With its repertoire of year-round
events like the Kentucky State Fair held every August, and
easy access to a myriad of beautiful state parks, Louisville
has plenty to offer its visitors. Louisville is home to the
world famous Kentucky Derby and its adjacent year-round Museum.
Located at Gate 1 of historic Churchill Downs, the Museum
presents the traditions and excitement of the "greatest
two minutes in sports." During the Kentucky Derby Festival
visitors can watch Thunder Over Louisville, the world's largest
fireworks display; or attend the Great steamboat Race; or
marvel at the spectacle of the Pegasus Parade.
In downtown Louisville, visitors can explore
America's favorite pastime at the Louisville Slugger Museum.
Curious minds can visit the Louisville Science Center (all
the while keeping in mind that Thomas Edison introduced his
incandescent light bulb to the world for the first time at
the Southern Exposition in Louisville in 1883). Louisville
also boasts one of the country's most vibrant arts communities,
where Broadway shows, the Speed Art Museum, Glassworks, nationally
renowned Actors Theatre of Louisville, orchestra, ballet,
opera and more, inspire the creative spark in its visitors.
